Solène Biche is a French artist and architectural designer. Having spent the start of her career in China and the United Kingdom, she has enriched her sensitivity to context and cultural conditions. Her work engages with levity as a tool for interpretation, and in doing so, explores contemporary concerns as they relate to human experience. This subverts society’s expectation for austerity when dealing with sensitive topics. By dignifying tragedy with beauty, she allows for the breadth of global issues to be presented in a more digestible form. The decadent visual style present in her works serve as metaphysical symbols of commercial modernity that presage cultural decline. She juxtaposes cultural systems that foreground the experiences of under-represented social groups to communicate today’s landscape, and by making the consequences of these systems concrete, her works catalyse a sense of connection and empowerment.
